Hvar Island

EXPLORE HVAR ISLAND

Explore the elegance of Hvar Town, where polished stone streets lead to sunlit piazzas, centuries-old churches, and the grand Arsenal, home to Europe’s oldest public theatre, dating back to 1612. Climb to the Spanish Fortress (Fortica Španjola) for panoramic views of the town and the shimmering Pakleni Islands, which you definitely need to visit. Just across the island lies Stari Grad, one of the oldest towns in Europe, where the Tvrdalj Castle offers a glimpse into authentic Renaissance life.

Just outside Stari Grad lies the Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO World Heritage site where ancient Greek agricultural patterns remain untouched. Stone walls divide plots still cultivated with olives and grapes exactly as they were over 2,400 years ago. This fertile landscape continues to feed both the island’s economy and its deep sense of identity.

From the pebbled Dubovica Beach to the remote coves of Mekićevica, Hvar’s coastline is a dream for sunseekers and swimmers. Rent a boat or kayak to explore the nearby Pakleni Islands, a string of pine-covered islets perfect for snorkeling or sipping cocktails at tucked-away beach bars. Inland, summer brings a sea of purple as lavender fields near Velo Grablje bloom in the warm breeze, filling the air with fragrance. This truly is something everyone needs to see at least once in their life.

Dining on Hvar is an experience rooted in tradition and terroir. Enjoy freshly grilled fish, octopus peka, or rich gregada, a local fisherman’s stew. Family-run konobas pair these dishes with island-made olive oil and Plavac Mali wine, grown on the steep sun-drenched slopes near Sveta Nedjelja and Zavala—an ideal sip at sunset.

As daylight fades, Hvar shifts into celebration mode. Hula Hula Bar offers laid-back beachside beats, while the exclusive Carpe Diem Beach Club, set on a private islet, pulses with energy well into the night. For something more low-key, wander the town and find live music, wine tastings, or a starlit square alive with local festivals.
