Jelsa

EXPLORE JELSA

Founded in the 14th century as a safe harbor for inland villagers, Jelsa grew around a protected bay, now flanked by stone quays and bobbing fishing boats. The heart of the town is Pjaca, a spacious stone square framed by cafés and overlooked by the Church of St. Fabian and Sebastian. From there, narrow alleys lead to hidden gardens, family-run bakeries, and historic stone houses weathered by sea breezes and time.

Just outside town lies a part of the Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where ancient Greek agricultural patterns still shape the land. Olive groves, citrus orchards, and vineyards are bordered by dry-stone walls built centuries ago, still in use today. Walking or cycling through these trails is like traveling through a living museum of Mediterranean agriculture.

For sea lovers, Jelsa offers easy access to some of the island’s most inviting swim spots. Head to Mina Beach for shallow, family-friendly waters or walk a little further to Grebišće, where pine trees meet sandy seabeds in a beautiful bay. The coastal walk from Jelsa to Vrboska winds through pine forests, quiet coves, and tiny chapels—perfect for a peaceful morning stroll.

Jelsa is at the heart of one of Hvar’s most important wine regions. Here, winemaking is not a trend—it’s a legacy. Tour the cellars of local producers like Tomić, Duboković, or Carić, and taste full-bodied reds made from Plavac Mali or aromatic whites like Bogdanuša, a variety that grows almost nowhere else on Earth. These wines are shaped by Hvar’s terroir: its sun, stone, and sea—and best enjoyed with a view.

Unlike Hvar Town’s glamor and nightlife, Jelsa thrives on tradition. Locals still gather in the early morning for coffee and in the evening for cards and conversation. Don’t miss the Feast of the Assumption in August, when the town bursts into life with concerts, food stalls, and the colorful procession of boats in the harbor. For a deeper cultural experience, visit during Holy Week to witness the UNESCO-protected Za Križen (“Behind the Cross”) procession, which links Jelsa with neighboring villages in a moving display of spiritual heritage and endurance.
